(mine).Although this sounds like bratty behavior, he also is very loving and chatters away in a soft, sweet voice that changes everything. His grandmother told me he eats sweets and then just explodes! However, she said, he has a very good ear for music.
He reminds me a lot of Sebastian when he was that age.

The Zocalo

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; They stayed at the hospital until after Sebastian was born and were the first people, aside from Fernando, to see him. So,we have this special bond for life.
I had spoken with Filemon on the phone over the years but hadn't seen him or met his wife and three boys.He was anxious to see Sebastian on this trip.
Filemon is also a painter and went to a school for art founded by Rufino Tamayo. At heart, he is still the boy from his ranch in the mountains. As a matter of fact, they had just gotten back from planting corn and beans up there.
During our visit,we were careful to wait until his wife was occupied with the boys before we took a stroll down "memory lane" and exchanged a bit of chisme(gossip). With three young boys ages 3,5, and 7, the house is lively!
On our way out,we stopped into his studio.I commented that I had never seen it so organized and that the large painting on the easel that he was working on was lighter in color and feeling than anything I had seen him do in a very long time.
I knew that this was an indication that he is truly content .

San Augustin Etla/Vista Hermosa y Fabrica de Papel (Paper Factory)

Tuesday evening we had a tremendous rainstorm.Sebastian arrived home about 10 pm accompanied by his Tio Alfredo and his Tia Lena.I told Lena that I wanted to go out to San Augustin Etla the next day and visit the paper factory there.Francisco Toledo-painter and patron (saint) of the arts in Oaxaca -worked on the project to restore the 17th. century structure and former factory for a cultural arts center that includes a factory where they make handmade paper. As my good friend,Karen Pfeil, is an artist and paper maker, I was curious about this place.Lena asked if I would like her to accompany me there.
Lena arrived by 10 am the next day and had phoned a former neighbor now living in San Augustin, to meet us and tour us around.
Lena is someone you really want on your team- she gets things organized and keeps conversation flowing- she has always been especially kind to me and looked after Sebastian when he was a baby.
We took a colectivo taxi (shared ride/set price/squeeze as many people as possible in) to the church in San Augustin and phoned Edgar, the family friend. As it turned out Edgar was the best guide -everywhere we went he was either related to someone there or was a friend of someone's cousin-muy conozido (well known).
San Augustin and Vista Hermosa are right next to each other- like Wyncote and Jenkintown or Old City and Society Hill. However, the walk from point A to B was intensely uphill. We decided to stop and have a bite to eat before the climb.
Nestled in the mountains, the view is truly beautiful.Clean, clear water runs down from the mountains through the village in stone gutters. It is a VERY quiet place.
Edgar said we were going to stop and see his nephew, who is an artist in the taller of his patron Maurisio Servantes).
The taller was a huge beautiful house with a large sunny courtyard.I felt a bit like I was in an Amoldovar film when the nephew came bouncing downstairs. His name is Angelo Alexander Dias Morales and he proudly showed me his canvases- most of which were huge.
Here is a photo of Lena,Edgar (in hat) and Angelo.
We proceeded up the steep climb to the church and paper factory It is spectacular- there is an amazing reflecting pool in front of the church and the cultural center features many pools and spectacular vistas.
Tucked away, down another steep road, was the actual paper taller. The paper maker turned out to be Edgar's cousin (of course) and gave us a demonstration of how they make paper. He strted by showing us all of the natural resources that they us- cotton, linen, hemp and various natural dyes and mica. They do use some alkaline synthetic dyes.
We looked at the large tubs of pulp and the handmade screen that they use. With an assistant, they put about 70 sheets of paper on the hand press and he pressed out all of the water. Next, he took out the hangers that are used for drying the paper outside in the sun.*(Note to Karen- I have many more photos to show you.)
We could see the rain clouds drifting towards us and decided it was time to head back to Oaxaca, with much thanks to our wonderful guide,Edgar!

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; I met these industrious young women in the zocalo.Rachael has been here six months and Leslie, who is working on her MFA at Carnegie Mellon, is here just for summer break. In an attempt to make some money, they have started this little open air portrait business. They bring the orange crushed velvet curtain from home, hang in over the rail of the kiosk in the center of the zocalo ,along with their sign and then proceed to work the crowd! For 30 pesos, you come back in a day or two and get two portraits- one small, one large. They seem to do a fair amount of business and are so cheerful and energetic! Here they have their example photo albums, which I refer to as their "Check it out"books.Note,Leslie's book- top photo-ME!
I love what they're doing because many <img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; This dance festival was originally an offering to the gods for a prosperous year of plentiful crops.
There was an astounding array of brilliant traditional costume, lively music and incredible dance and footwork - and sometimes a live animal or two such as a turkey dressed with the items for a shamanic ceremony such as ribbons and cigarettes! Each puebla's performance told a different tale of their history, myths, everyday life and major life events such as marriage. After each performance, the group had canastas (baskets) of fruits, vegetables, bread and sweets that they threw out to the crowd. It created utter chaos!!!
Speeches punctuated the performances- some explained the traditional dress of the puebla, others reminded all present that we laugh and dance today because we do not know what tomorrow may bring.Still others reminded everyone that this event was for the PEOPLE of Oaxaca!

There was a very "fiesta" atmosphere- outside of the stadium were lots of vendors selling food, straw hats, t-shirts and ropa tipica.Port-o-potties were set up as well.
It was a challenge to take photographs although we were seated about 12 rows from the stage, behind the seats reserved for the dancers.People popped up and down taking videos, using their cellphones as well as cameras to take pictures. Here are a few just to give you an idea of the movement and color- it was complete sensory overload- compounded by a brilliant, unrelenting sun! Many people here use umbrellas for shade but as soon as someone opened one in this crowd,EVERYONE shouted for them to close it so as to not block the view of those behind them.
Finally, at about 2:30 we decided it was time to go- there was no end in sight for the dancers.I was told this would go on until 5 or 6 pm!
I was very grateful to the family for bringing me t0 such an amazing experience!

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Saturday evening the goverment sponsored Guelaguetza had their calenda through the city- I saw part of it and it was very polished and a HUGE tourist attraction.

I met the family at 3:30 on Sunday and we walked several miles to Xochimilco, a very old cobble stone neighborhood outside of Oaxaca ,where we would meet up with the calenda. You see, most everything is word of mouth here.Even if there is a "scheduled" time, you can pretty much disregard it.
When we found the calenda, we came upon a group of mostly young boys (there was one young lady in ora<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; (traditional dress).Groups of dancers from various regions along with their bandas de musica were joined by monos and cuetes.Political slogans were everywhere and <img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; Below is pictures of two graffiti pieces on the street. the second picture is a stencil of canttin flas, who was the Charlie Chaplin of mexico. The first picture after that is me with my spray paint stencil. I would like to thank my friend Tim who sent me a picture of my print and suggested that i make a stencil. the second picture is a new thing that i just learned how to do called dry point. it involves taking a image and using a sharp metal tool to etch it on to a plastic plate. Then you put ink on it and print it. the picture that etched is from the newspaper of two boys , one has a sling shot. you can click on it to make it bigger. check out oaxacatimes.com for an article on graffiti. <img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; MORE family?!?!? SI!

This morning we left at 9 am to go to Ocotlan with Fernando, four of his sisters and their boyfriends and husbands and little niece (we were in two cars) for breakfast.Friday is the market day there and we ate inside of the permanent mercado. As you can see, Sebastian was thrilled to be up early and to have me take, yet more, photos.

Every outing is a surprise and after a visit to the church, which was beautifully painted with lovely, well dressed saints, we got back in the car to go visit ...more family! This part of the family lives in San Martin Tilcajete , a village known for it's carved animals.Part of Fernando's family are in this artful business! We went to two casas and shared the road with a herd of goats having their comida!
I took photos of the animals as they were being carved and then painted- it's quite a process and the end result is colorful and very imaginative.
If you look closely at the photo of the table of animals, Seb's Tia Lena bought the black and white cow for Seb.

Seb and his second cousins played on the swing in the yard and then went to the local tienda (shop) to buy some homemade cuetes. Little Panchito (in photo with Seb)immediately connected with Seb and worked up such a sweat lighting and throwing cuetes that he had to remove his sweater! He is six years old and a total chatterbox! She showed us a really precious piece of pre-Columbian
pottery- a nearly complete angel playing a guitar- that she found up in the mountains behind the house. After we all admired it's beauty, she gave it to Sebastian! A very precious gift, indeed!

The Other Side....

The night after the governor's PR posters went up in the zocalo, we heard cuetes for another calenda. This one was different from the other that we had posted.Yes, there was a banda de musica yes, there were dancing monos. However, when we got to the zocalo, we saw that all of the pretty posters were taken down and replaced by this graffiti to promote "the other Guelaguetza" of the teachers and APPO and to raise tourist awareness of the ongoing lucha (fight) for human rights in Oaxaca . Loosely translated and interpreted , APPO is the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca- a group that was formed during the 2006 conflict, a group to promote the popular opinion and to help the general population.

The next day, ALL of this graffiti was painted over- gone!
Today, I found out that some of Sebastian's aunts were part of that calenda.

There is a very powerful exhibition now at the Centro Fotografico Manuel Alvarez Bravo that includes photographs and video documentaries of the 2006 conflict. you can check out their blog- even if you cannot read Spanish, the photographs speak volumes.

www.cfmab.blogspot.com

Wacky Wahaka...

Life is fascinating when you're traveling/visiting/living in another culture.Seb and I are constantly amazed at some of the things we encounter in daily life here.Of course, we LOVE to glamorize, just a wee bit but truth is stranger than fiction!
Here are a few of our favorite "Wacky Wahaka" things:

What to do about dirty laundry?I've been using the lavanderia across the street from where we live.Their sign proudly boasts that they have been in business since 1948.We suspect, however, that they also have a black market ropa interior (underwear) business. The first load of laundry I took over came back minus a pair of my ropa interior.Second load came back minus Seb's pj bottoms. However, the third load came back WITH the missing pj bottoms. Seb suspects the owner may just have wanted to try them on.

One of Seb's favorite treats- paleta de leche quemada con tuna - ice cream bar of burnt milk and prickly pear fruit.

One of Karen's favorite's- nieves de las rosa - ice cream made from rose petals.

The last two Mondays of this month is the Guelaguetza - a dance festival where people come from all seven regions of Oaxaca state to perform here and people come from all over the world to see it.This has become a huge commercial tourist venture.Since the conflict of 2006, when the governor cancelled this festival, there have been TWO Guelaguetzas- one sponsored by the governor ,which is very expensive to attend and one sponsored by the teachers, which is free to all.Of course the governor has a bit more money to promote his event, so several days ago, the zocalo was plastered with huge colorful posters of dancers from different regions in traditional costume.Someone in PR must have an incredible sense of humor because this is the poster that seems to have attracted the most attention- it's our personal favorite. I wondered exactly what this had to say about the Guelaguetza. Seb seems to think it's to show the REALLY huge diversity here.

Busy Weekend...Part Two

Sunday we went to Tlacolula, a village about 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca.Sunday is their market day and our favorite because it s also the day for barbacoa de chivo (goat BBQ- yummers!!) My joke to Sebastian , as we were eating our tacos de chivo, was "Chivo, the other white meat"...
The mercado is a collision of all worlds: pirated DVD current movies, plastic EVERYTHING, Puma and other brand knock-offs alongside embroidered blouses, aprons, natural remedies, meszcal, chicken on the grill, fruits, vegetables and flowers! You can buy raw meat and use the public open grills in the center of the market.Sebastian commented that everyone was talking so fast, chirping like the pair of colibris (hummingbirds) that chatter outside of my bedroom here. The mercado is indeed colorful in sight, sound and smell!
The church here is known for it's chapel, one of my personal favorites. The small side chapel is filled with three dimensional depictions of saints in the act of their martyrdom- some are being boiled in oil, some have hatchets in the middle of their heads, some are being crucified upside down (to name just a few). There is a large oil painting of San Sebastian which, of course, I love!
Always Fernando and Sebastian sit in the courtyard and eat nieves de limon (lime water ice) while I go into the chapel and light a candle.

Fernando bought a video camera and Sebastian is making a video of his travels. However, it appears that it is really turning into a video about the graffiti here.On the way to Tlacolula, we walked up to the road by a school and stadium that has several streets totally lined with graffiti. Now, even I am taking photos of it!Below are some of my graffiti photos, including a pole plastered with an advert for a Lucha Libre match and reflections in the school building.
Fernando and Sebastian are hard at working, getting the right shot...

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; It is a lovely dialect with lots of ssshhhsh type of sounds, like falling water.
It was also a week of one of their largest fiestas- Danza de Las Plumas (Dance of the Feathers).During the dance, the community officials and the dancers exchange gifts of fruit, beer, tamals, and refrescos (soft drinks).Of course, visiting the church is an important part of the festivities along with a fair which Omar's father called Peqeuno Disneylandia (Little Disneyland).
I went up to the church and Sebastian and Omar went to the fair. After an hour of playing games, this was Sebastian's prize- Silvestre (Sylvester).

Adventures in Weaving...

This week Sebastian and I had quite the adventure. We thought we were just going out to Teotitlan del Valle, a Zapotec weaving village, for my four day intensive weaving/dyeing workshop.Well, life is always more than the obvious here.

Seb's previous post is a description of our first day in transit from the village back to Oaxaca - typically a 20-30 minute ride - a two and a half hour adventure that day. To save $- we were taking the local autobus (4.5 pesos = .45 US) vs. a taxi (150 pesos = $15). And so the fun began...
At one point, we were seeing the same bus driver no matter the time of day...Sebastian said he felt like Tom Hank's in Groundhog Day (I felt like Lola in Run,Lola, Run.) We would leave home at about 7:45, walk a half a mile or so and then wait...and wait.. and wait. (I will never complain about SEPTA again!) We usually got to the village at about 9 am and would return home about 7pm.

I was taking a workshop organized by a jolly sweet woman named Norma Hawthorne from North Carolina. She was there the first two days and posted our experience on her blog-www.oaxacaculture.wordpress.com- check it out!!!!
The workshop is called Dancing on the Loom and it truly was! I worked with the Chavez Santiago family which are fourth generation weavers. The father,Federico and daughter, Janet were my main teachers. I had asked if I could bring Sebastian and it turned out that there is 14 year old son named Omar, who was delivered by the same doctor and born in the same hospital as Sebastian.

I had the experience of learning to wind my bobbin by hand and to use a two pedal, two harness (standing)loom. I will skip the details but for those who are interested, I will be posting a "sabbatical" blog- www.wovenculture.blogspot.com.starting this weekend- check it out!
I completed my rug in 4 days!!! I learned the traditional way to knot and create fringe to finish off and protect my rug!

Omar ,who has been weaving since he was 8, taught Seb how to spin yarn by hand and they worked together, for a bit. Then, off they went to play XBox 360, shoot slingshots, ride in the back of the pick up truck to pick up tortillas, tamals, and helados (ice cream.)Each day we had breakfast, snack and comida Seb returned home from his day with his father about 8pm.The hissssBOOM!!! of cuates (homemade fireworks) filled the air. No, it was not an Independence Day celebration. In Oaxaca, cuates usually indicate that a CALENDA is passing through. Calendas are processions that mark feast day fiestas of saints, Mary, Jesus, etc.The cuates announce the calenda which includes a banda de musica (ALWAYS a tuba!), women in regional costume dancing with baskets of flowers (offerings) on their heads and monos- dancing, larger than life , fully clothed ,papier mache figures on a cane frame worn by a boy or man. Calendas come from different parishes throughout the city.
There is always a figure of the honored party on a float, pulled by a flat bed truck.

This calenda was from the Precious Blood of Christ parish and this was the float we encountered.
Yes, that is a real guy hanging up on that cross!
At the back of the Santo Domingo church, the procession turns into a brief street party with dancing and mezcal, juice (for the kids) and tortas (sandwiches) distributed to all, courtesy of the parishioners.Seb was a little taken aback when he was offered the mezcal, which he wisely declined and settled for some sugar-water juice!

The man on the cross untied himself, briefly and a good time was had by all!
(all photos taken by Seb)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://sebnkaren.blogspot.com/2008/07/july-4th-cuates-fireworks.html' title='July 4th.
